Who:

Accounting and Finance students of all class levels are invited! In addition, faculty is encouraged to attend.

What:

The purpose of Fall Symposium is to provide students with an opportunity to get acquainted with a large group of firms in a social setting before fall interviews. This event follows a career fair format, and it is an excellent way to meet professionals and become familiar with different firms. It is free to attend as a student or faculty member. Light refreshments will be provided. The dress code is strictly business professional and backpacks should not be brought to the venue.

Where:

Cal Poly’s Chumash Auditorium in the University Union (UU).

When:

The 2012 Fall Symposium will be on Friday, September 28. As in the past, the event will be separated into two sections. The first section will be reserved for senior and graduate students. The remainder of the event will be for all students interested in learning about potential internship opportunities, leadership programs, and possible careers in the field of accounting or finance.

  • 11:00AM – 12:30PM: Senior and Graduate students only! This time slot has been reserved for seniors and graduates interviewing this fall for a career position or internship in accounting or finance.
  • 12:00PM: CPAC informational session for underclassmen, by board members, about what to expect and tips for networking. Located in UU-219.
  • 12:30PM – 1:30PM: Open to all students. This will be a mix of all class levels.

Why:

  • Freshmen: It's never too early to start familiarizing yourself with the firms that recruit from Cal Poly and getting your name out there. Making yourself visible at these events will help recruiters remember who you are and how much you care about getting a job.
  • Sophomores and Juniors: Introduce yourself to firms and find out a little more about what they offer. Network and don’t forget to get those business cards. Find out about possible summer leadership and internship opportunities.
  • Seniors and Graduates: Introduce or re-introduce yourself to the firms you are interested in interviewing with. Continue to network after the event so firms will know who you are by the time fall interviews come up.

How:

Students interested in attending this year’s Fall Symposium should sign up at CPAC’s Fall Symposium table in the Business Building Breezeway (the stairway between the Business and Education Buildings). At the time of the event, elegant printed nametags will be waiting for those who registered in advance. Those who just show up to the event will have to write their own. While signing up for the event is not required, it helps us plan, and you will be rewarded with free but limited giveaways and a helpful handout.

Volunteers will staff the sign-up table between 10AM to 2PM Monday through Thursday. The last day to register is Wednesday, September 26. Act soon!

How to Prepare

What to Wear:

Dress is business professional. That is to say wear your best suit and dress to impress. Please plan ahead to arrive to the venue without a backpack.

Resume Workshop:

In addition to this exciting event, we will be co-hosting a resume workshop for all students on Tuesday, September 25 from 2:00p.m. – 3:00p.m. in room 117 of the Career Services Center. Seth Igarta and four other counselors will be there to help clean up your business resume. Each student will be able to sit down and meet with a counselor individually to go over his or her resume. Senior CPAC students will also be available to answer questions about the interview process and comment on their internship experiences.

Informational Session for Underclassmen:

We advise students who have never attended the Fall Symposium event to arrive at 11:30a.m. for an informal discussion led by CPAC Board members in room UU-216. This brief session will be a great opportunity to brush up on your networking skills and prepare for interaction with the firm professionals.
